At Mercatino Restaurant, we believe the internet should be available and accessible to everyone, and we are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstances and ability. To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the AA level, according to the Israeli Standard SI 5568. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities. Complying with these guidelines helps us ensure the website is accessible to all: blind people, those with motor impairments, visual impairments, cognitive disabilities, and more.
This website complies with these guidelines and additionally utilizes various technologies to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We employ an accessibility interface that allows people with specific disabilities and without screen reader bridging to adjust the website’s UI and design it to their personal needs.
Furthermore, the website uses an AI-based technological application by AccessiBe that operates in the background. This component continuously optimizes our site’s accessibility level. The application adapts the website’s functionality and behavior for screen readers used by blind users and adds keyboard shortcuts for people with motor impairments who don’t use screen readers.
Using screen readers and keyboard navigation on our website
Our site implements ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) techniques alongside various behavioral modifications to ensure blind users visiting with screen readers can read, understand, and enjoy the website’s functions. When a screen reader user enters the site, they can activate the screen reader profile to browse and operate the site efficiently. Thus, our website covers some of the most critical screen reader requirements including (but not limited to*):
Screen reader optimization: We provide meaningful data to screen readers through ARIA attribute sets. For example, we supply accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); form input validation instructions; element roles like buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all site images and provides precise, meaningful descriptions as ALT (alternative text) tags for images lacking description, using image-object recognition. It also extracts embedded texts via OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To activate screen reader adjustments at any time, users need only press Alt+1. Screen reader users also receive automatic announcements to activate screen reader mode upon entering the site. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers including JAWS and NVDA.
Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adapts the site’s HTML and adds various behaviors via JavaScript to make the website operable via keyboard. This includes navigating with Tab and Shift+Tab, operating dropdowns with arrow keys, closing them with Esc, triggering buttons and links with Enter, navigating radio and checkbox elements with arrow keys, and filling them with Spacebar or Enter. Keyboard users will also find quick-navigation and content-skip menus available anytime via Alt+1 or by navigating to the first site elements while keyboard browsing. The background process handles triggered popups by directing keyboard focus toward them when they appear, preventing focus from drifting outside. Users can also utilize shortcuts like “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
Accessibility profiles supported on our site
Epilepsy Safe Profile: This profile enables people with epilepsy to safely use the site by eliminating seizure risks from flashing animations and dangerous color combinations.
Vision Impaired Profile: This profile adapts the site for most visual impairments like degrading eyesight, tunnel vision, cataracts, glaucoma, and others.
Cognitive Disability Profile: This profile provides various assistive features to help users with cognitive disabilities like autism, dyslexia, stroke, and others focus more easily on essential elements.
ADHD Friendly Profile: This profile significantly reduces distractions and noise to help people with ADHD and neurodevelopmental disorders browse, read, and focus more easily on key elements.
Blind Users Profile (Screen Readers): This profile adapts the site to be compatible with screen readers like JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen reader is installed on the blind user’s computer, and this site is compatible with it.
Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): This profile enables motor-impaired people to operate the website using keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and Enter keys. Users can also employ shortcuts like “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F”
